Wicor Primary School’s hall was filled with the sound of silence as twenty-two Oakleyites met for an hour’s introduction to the world of Tai Chi. Deep breathing, focused thinking, intense concentration and graceful movements, worthy of a ballet dancer are not normally associated with Oakley activities but they were all there and, it has to be said, all appreciated by the gathering. Tai Chi teacher, Andrew Austin really worked the group and provided a worthwhile activity for all. The pizza, ice cream and coke, which followed, seemed rather commonplace in comparison.
Sarah Kay and Matt Pitt, University bound, provided maturity and gravitas, Kathy Sealy, Kate Smallshaw, Izzy Printer, Tash Pitt, Maria Bowles, Hannah Croad and Rachel Skinner kept us in touch with our feminine side while new kids on the block, Greg Asher, Stephen Falconer, Dan Hodgkin, George Potter and Barney Walker showed that they could Tai chi with the best of them.
Big Hunky Year 11 men, Dave Gauld, Mike Falconer, Matt Linney and Mike Warner looked and acted cool both during and after the Tai Chi. But, it was the peacocks among us who really stole the show. Using the excuse of an imminent party four of our number had really gone to town in the dressing up box. Charlie Potter and Josh Rowe looked absolutely gorgeous in pink and Jack Hopkins wore a bright yellow number reminiscent of a ripe banana but it was Max Gibson who carried the evening with a glowing yellow T-shirt, which would have put the sun to shame, set off with an oh so delicate vivid pink belt. “Oh brave new world, That hath such people in it.” The whole thing was organised by Lewis Kent and paid for by Gordon Brown. A good time was had by all!
