61. Be an Erasmus scholar – an opportunity for university students
Oakley member MATT PITT spent the autumn term of his second year at Sheffield University in Finland as an Erasmus scholar. Could follow in his footsteps?
Read these questions and answers to help you decide
•Erasmus? Erasmus Desiderius a Dutch writer, scholar, humanist and theologian who travelled Europe tutoring and lecturing
•Purpose? to allow student mobility within the European community
•When I can go? In your second or any subsequent year whilst at university
•Where can I go ? 31 European countries take part with over 2000 Higher Education Institutions, from Finland to Turkey to Cyprus to Latvia!
•What can I do? You can study abroad, do a work placement or be a language assistant, for 3 months to a year
•How can I find out about Erasmus? Most Universities in the UK take part so just ask your course coordinator or visit the website.
•What about money? You will receive a grant from your home institution unless you have already exceeded your 24 month grant allocation. You only get Erasmus grant throughout your university career. Obviously Places in the EU vary in prices considerably - for example if you go to Scandinavia (Finland) it will be a lot more expensive than going to Central Europe (Hungary)
•Why Go? Matt Pitt writes “ The experience of living in another country is amazing, learning about a new, diverse and rich culture and history is a great thing to do. It looks really good on your CV, and counts towards your degree. Helps you to become a more mature and independent person and, of course, you will have the most fun and brilliant time.”
•Will I be on my own ? ESN ( Erasmus student network ) organises trips, activities and social meetings for Erasmus students in your area. There is an ESN at each institution and it’s a great chance to meet other Erasmus students and go on trips in the country you're living in and even to surrounding countries
