56. Start your own wormery
This is a project recommended by Oakley member DAVID DERBYSHIRE and is probably best suited to those living in family homes with gardens.
Why bother with worms? Well
.
British homes throw away an astonishing 10 million tons of food each year.
It ends up in landfill sites where it breaks down to release methane - one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
You can cut down on the amount of food waste going to the tip with a wormery. Worms eat kitchen waste including tea bags, bread, vegetable peelings and paper and convert it into rich compost for the garden.
You can buy worm composting bins - or even make your own. They can go inside your house or in the garden.
A worm will recycle half its own body weight of waste each day. RED WORMS (right) and tiger worms are best.
Oakley Contact: David Derbyshire will be pleased to give you more information about costs, suppliers and discuss with you some of the questions to consider before you commit your family to a wormy way of life!
