47. RECYCLE SPECTACLES FOR A CLEARER FUTURE

This is a good idea for those who have grandparents! A single secondary school class could aim to collect around 30 pairs – one pair from each family.

The charity Vision Aid Overseas collects unwanted pairs of glasses, renovates them and then dispenses them free of charge to people in the developing world

Ask your grandparents if they have old pairs of glasses, probably for reading, put away in a cupboard. It’s odds-on they can produce a pair, not broken, but simply replaced.

You can hand them in at any of the 300 branches of Vision Express in the UK who will pass them on to Vision Aid Overseas.

It costs VAO £3 to collect, renovate and transport your glasses to a person in need of them, so you could consider a small fund raising effort to send money as well as glasses.

All types of glasses are welcomed by VAO, but don’t send your grandparents as well!

You can see more details on the well-organised and detailed VAO website.
