32. Race for life
Race for Life events – usually 5 kilometres - are open to women of all levels of fitness. There is no prize for first place and almost half the participants choose to walk the course.
Oakley member Jenny Beake, pictured here with sister-in-law Christine and nephew Edward, took part in her first Race for life in July 2009 and is very willing to pass on her experience to others.
Last year, 665,000 women took part in 280 venues across the UK between May and July. This year, Cancer Research UK hopes even more women take part.
Since it began in 1994, Race for Life has raised over £200 million, which has helped to bring about some real improvements in the outlook for people with cancer in the UK. On average, ten-year survival rates have doubled since the 1970s.
The Race for Life website will tell you all the details of events taking place near you.
