706,011 revolutions of his bike wheels have taken Julian Wilde, the Secretary of Oakley Holidays, all 312 miles from Prague in the Czech Republic to Vienna in Austria
Julian Wilde who lives in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire tackled the route over seven days as a solo unsupported ride to raise funds for three charities - the Blackpool and Fylde Talking Newspaper, St. Luke’s Leprosy Hospital in southern India and Oakley Holidays.
“I followed the special Greenways route which takes you across the rolling rural landscape of southern Bohemia and Moravia, mostly by means of country roads,” said Julian. “One of the highlights was staying in very small B and Bs which I had found on the internet. At the remote hamlet of Slup I was awakened by 47 geese and three peacocks outside my bedroom window!”
Advice on fitness from Bernadette Kelly-Corsini at the Lytham Clinic and expertise on dealing with bike breakdowns from The Lytham Cycle Outlet stood Julian in good stead as he averaged 45 miles a day.
“My training in the wind on the Prom. at St. Annes was invaluable,” Julian commented, “ because on two days I was straight into a head wind on the exposed ridges close to the border. There I saw all the abandoned guard posts from the time of the Cold War.”
Julian, 64, has already collected approaching £4000 in donations and sponsorship from friends as a reward for completing a ride which saw him lose 10 pounds in weight.
“I think the sentiments of the The Beatles’‘When I’m 64’ were a bit of a warning to keep pedalling, ” he said. “Pipe and slippers by the fireside seemed a long way off when I was lost in the forest in the National Park!
Being on my own meant that it was a solitary but not a lonely experience. It provided the freedom to make my own decisions and much personal satisfaction when I finally made it to Stephansplatz in the very centre of Vienna.”
