Oakley Conference Review - 2009

group 38 of the leaders of the Oakley Holidays met at Barnes Close, a conference house on the western outskirts of Birmingham, from February 13 to 15 for their annual Conference which was chaired by Jenny Beake.

group The programme included a review of the 2008 Holidays, led by Julian Wilde, and discussions, introduced by Russel Bailey, on plans for 2009 when Oakley celebrates its 90th anniversary.

group Caroline Derbyshire’s excellent presentation led members through a consideration of the environmental, economic and political challenges ahead, symbolized by Barack Obama’s new Presidency, and Lewis Kent devised an entertaining exercise carried out in small groups to consider the value of money.

group Each of the sessions included a chance for everyone to chair discussions and report back which was especially valued by the 10 members who will be leaders for the first time at the 2009 holidays at Bilton Grange.

group On Saturday afternoon a vigorous walk in the adjacent Waseley Country Park was led by Imogen Lambourn and Phil Stubley, whilst Alex Harrison and Chris Troughton organised a session of outdoor games.

group Quiet Times were led by Adam Hall ( on the subject of the use of time ), Emily Summers ( the power of words ), Jon Vernazza ( listening and tolerance) and Vicky Thomas ( hope and optimism ). Kathy Sealy introduced the topic of the diversity of support for charitable causes at the Oakley Holidays and looked at the development of the new Oakley on-line Making a Difference directory.

group The Conference concluded with a decision-making time, chaired by Jenny Beake, in readiness for the 2009 Holidays. Details will be circulated to all Oakley leaders.

group Warm thanks were expressed to Warden Ian Ring, manager Tabi Marsh and the staff of Barnes Close for their hospitality as members departed by car and train after a very enjoyable, relaxing and profitable weekend of listening, talking and thinking.
