Oakley Charity Support - Easter 2010 Round-Up

MileThe second Oakley Sports Relief Mile was a brilliantly crazy event. After everyone had watched some impressive and moving TV clips from the Sports Relief Day a fortnight earlier, each dormitory was given just half an hour to devise fancy dress on the theme of films. After a parade, photos and a mass start members proceeded at their own pace up to the North Lodge and back, with Joe Bailey the first home in an impressive 4 minutes 40 seconds. Crème Eggs were the prizes and £114 was raised.

Four good causes, suggested by members of the Holiday, will share a special collection, amounting to £616, which was taken up at one of the evening services.
The first of these was the Marie Curie Cancer Care who had cared for Rachel Skinner’s grandfather wonderfully and provided respite for the family.
Lewis Kent told members about a walk from Land’s End to John O’ Groats which his brother would be undertaking in May to raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Lucy Whigham spoke about the work of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust – her grandmother has been suffering from this illness for several years.
Nick and Chris Searing recommended Bowel Cancer UK – Chris is doing a sky dive for this charity this summer as several members of his family have suffered from the illness.

MAD Liz Whitehead and Hayden Cole coordinated the charity activities spread through the week and also gave members a chance to view a picture show of 61 pages which make up the Making A Difference directory on the Oakley website.

Tuck Spare five pence pieces at the daily tuck shop were again donated to the work of the St Luke's Leprosy Hospital in Southern India visited by Oakley member Ed Nussey (see MAD page 26) These were stored in a new Oakley piggy bank which was named Boaris Johnson. The tuck shop itself ‘ went green’ with only sweets without wrappers on sale which purchasers put into their own paper bag. Tap water replaced fizzy drinks !

Mile2 The seven members who were leaders for the first time celebrated their new role by choosing gifts for communities in the developing world from the Oxfam Unwrapped catalogue worth £100

Bin Members had the chance to recycle their waste paper and cardboard in a special bin – amazingly the green skip in the photograph was filled twice - and to avoid waste by using recycled envelopes to order their photographs of the week.

Glasses The leaders began a collection of spectacles which, after the summer Oakley Holiday, will be sent to Vision Aid Overseas for renovation prior to distribution in developing countries (see MAD page 47)

Aquabox All those on the Holiday brought £1 and a small item to put in the Aquabox an emergency aid container which when empty becomes a water purification tank. This will provide clean water for a family of four for 8 months. Volunteers spent one profitable afternoon organizing and packing the items into the Aquabox ( see MAD page 40 )
