Oakley Charity Support - Summer 2009 Round-Up

Seven charities were supported by those attending the Oakley Holiday in July 2009. They did this directly, by donating over £700 as well as filling 23 shoeboxes with gifts for deprived children in Eastern Europe, and indirectly by becoming more aware of the work of a number of charities and of the ideas behind them.

ChequeThree of the good causes which members had suggested were supported by a special collection, taken up at one of the evening services. Each received £234.
The first of these was the Intensive Care Unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital where Hayden Cole’s grandfather had received excellent care following a heart attack.
Katherine Fellows spoke about how her own family had been supported by the charity Victim Support which provides assistance in cases where a family has been affected by a serious crimes committed against them .
Lucy and Will Blundell told everyone about the fund set up to provide a guide-dog for their friend Lizzie Smart , aged 17, who has lost her sight following a severe illness earlier in the year.

Amazon Boat Merchandise50 pence from each sale of the special limited-edition merchandise produced for Oakley’s 90th anniversary went to The Vine Trust which funds two boats providing medical services to remote communities on the River Amazon.

Tom and Louise Tom Cousins and Louise Sweeney coordinated the charity activities spread through the week and also gave members a chance to view the 17 new pages which have been added this year to the Making A Difference directory on the Oakley website.

Shoeboxes Oakley’ s second shoebox appeal (see MAD page 36) saw each person bringing three small gifts and each dormitory spending a further £4 to create a box of gifts suitable for a teenage boy or girl. The 23 decorated boxes were subsequently delivered to the International Aid Trust near Preston which works particularly with children’s homes in Romania.

Tuck Shop Spare five pence pieces at the daily tuck shop were again donated to the work of the St Luke's Leprosy Hospital in Southern India, visited by Oakley member Ed Nussey last summer (see MAD page 26).

Present Aid The nine members who were leaders for the first time celebrated their new role by choosing gifts for communities in the developing world from the
Present Aid catalogue worth £100.

cartridges Members had the chance to recycle their waste paper in a special bin, to take home a freepost envelope in which to recycle used print ink cartridges (see MAD page 3) and to avoid waste by using recycled envelopes to order their photographs of the week.
