Oakley Charity Support - Summer 2007 Round-Up

balloonsAt the suggestion of two members of the Oakley Summer 2007 holiday, it was Diabetes UK and Find Your Feet which were the charities supported by means of a collection and Oakley's first ever balloon race. £600 was divided between these two good causes. Abby Baxter and Ed Sealy told members about their personal connections with these charities and everyone attended the launch of 200 helium balloons – the first card returned was from a balloon found just 16 hours later 136 miles away near the coast of Suffolk .

In the evening of each day of the Summer holiday, one dormitory in turn made a small contribution to preventing global warming by turning off their mains electricity lighting and lighting their room by use of Solartek lamp (purchased earlier this year and introduced on the Easter 2007 holiday) which had been charged up by solar panels during the day.

The five members who were leaders for the first time celebrated their new role at Oakley by choosing gifts for communities in developing countries from the Good Gifts guide. These included a year's supply of seed and funding for an HIV support worker.

groupDuring the Oakley Summer holiday, the 19 cyclists who took part in the Ravenstone Relay on 1st July collected in the last of their sponsorship money and reached their target of £1000.

With the addition of £280 in Gift Aid the group was able to donate £1280 to the Vine Trust which supports two medical boats which visit remote communities on the Amazon.

During the Oakley Summer week, regular attender Ed Bury meanwhile was on this occasion over 5000 miles away in Namibia on a month-long World Challenge expedition. The final part of the trip saw Ed working in a local school where he was able to make use of the funds collected by members in the Lytham area as the result of a raffle of promises last December.
